When it comes to an original animated film, the Pete Docter-led administration at Pixar Studios can celebrate a big breakthrough with Hoppers which jumped to an $88M global opening, broken out by $42M (81% offshore footprint) international and $46M stateside. As we've been writing all weekend, it's the best opening for an original animated film, and a Pixar original animated movie since 2017's Coco ($104.7M WW in like-for-likes). Hoppers also outstrips the like-for-like global starts of Pixar originals 2020's Onward ($65.6M) and 2023's Elemental ($65.1M). If domestic is any indication, Hoppers is pulling in a broad audience with 52% general and 48% families. Quite often on a Pixar movie like this, it can be family leaning in the 60 percentile. 'Hoppers' Bounces To $46M U.S., Best For Pixar Original Since 'Coco'; 'The Bride!' Ugly With $7M+ - Sunday AM Box Office Update Gulf's Peak Eid Al Fitr Box Office Season Faces Uncertainty As Israel-U.S.-Iran Conflict Shakes Middle East 1 MPA in all major markets including UK ($6.4M), Mexico ($3.7M), France ($3.6M; Hoppers finally beat the big local family title Marsupilami in its 5th weekend for No. 1), Germany ($3.5M), Spain ($2.8M, overperformed), Korea ($2.1M very good, but No. 2 behind mega local period title The King's Warden in weekend 7), Italy ($1.9M) and Brazil ($1.8M). 4 in India (where original U.S. animation is an uphill battle). Impressive is that Hoppers sprung outside of a holiday window (most holidays will hit toward the end of the month beginning of April when Illumination/Nintendo/Universal's Super Mario Bros Galaxy arrives. Don't worry — the global marketplace can support three to four family titles at once). Regionally it is the second highest opening weekend of 2026 and the highest opening for an original animated film since Coco (2017). It was also the highest opening weekend of 2026 to date in nearly all markets. Regionally it was the highest opening for an original animated film since Elemental. The Friday to Saturday increase was significantly above comps, reflecting strong word of mouth. Hoppers only opened in five markets this weekend: Korea, Philippines, Thailand, India and Indonesia. It opened at #1 (non-local), as well as posting the highest non-local opening of 2026 to date, in all five markets. In both India and Thailand, Hoppers opened as the highest grossing original animated film since the pandemic. Next big openings are in Japan, Israel, Hong Kong, Singapore and Vietnam next weekend; China on March 20 and Australia on March 26 (to capitalize on school breaks). How well Hoppers does in China is up for grabs. While Zootopia 2 connected with audiences there with its great rabbit symbolism, the one big plus for Pixar's latest heading into China is that Hoppers has trailered greatly on Zootopia 2 which is up to $667M there. Pixar originals have paled similar to the U.S. post Coco which was a fiesta there with $189M+ (reported). with an international take of $6.3M in 70 markets, lower than domestic's $7.3M. Typically, an auteur driven movie can find an audience in Europe, however, Maggie Gyllenhaal wasn't a selling point at this time for sophisticated moviegoers in the way that Paul Thomas Anderson or Quentin Tarantino would be. In many markets, the Christian Bale and Jessie Buckley starring movie wasn't even in the top 10. The Bride‘s best gross (if you can call it that) was the UK with $950K where it was No. We'll have more foreign updates for you later. Get our Breaking News Alerts and Keep your inbox happy. Malcolm McDowell was catapulted into instant fame when he starred in the 1971 Stanley Kubrick sci-fi classic “A Clockwork Orange.” Instead, he was inundated with offers and pressured to accept new roles because of the money on the table or who he'd be working with. When McDowell would say, “The script's very bad,” he was told, “Well, who cares?” “Now, in retrospect, I should have just done the damn movie,” he confessed. “There are a few things I really should have done, you know,” he continued. Despite never achieving that level of fame again, McDowell has carved out an enviable career that has included dozens of film and TV roles, including “Star Trek Generations,” “Entourage,” “Mozart in the Jungle,” and Dr. Samuel Loomis in the 2007 remake of “Halloween” as well as its 2009 sequel, “Halloween II.” By clicking above you agree to the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. His latest film is another horror flick, “Psycho Killer,” which follows a police officer on her quest to apprehend a serial killer known as “The Satanic Slasher,” after he murdered her state trooper husband. McDowell is refreshingly clear-sighted about his career, which transitioned into character and supporting parts. “You're not worried about what your persona is,” he shared.
The 32-year-old country singer's ex-boyfriend, actor Chase Stokes, spoke up in defense of the “Cowboys Cry Too” singer after her ex-husband, Morgan Evans, spoke about their divorce while on Bobby Bones' podcast, “The BobbyCast.” “This is about the most pathetic excuse of masculinity I've ever seen. Bones later shared a screenshot of the deleted comment on his Instagram as part of a video in which he defended Evans. The host stressed that Evans has not publicly spoken about his divorce, saying “I thought he came off really well” in the podcast and “that he was very kind in his description and his version of events.” In his response to the criticism, Evans posted a series of photos on his Instagram featuring him doing stereotypical male activities, including carrying a heavy mini fridge and chopping wood, captioning the post, “Feeling pretty masculine today.” Even Bones got in on the comments section, writing, “I laughed.” While on Bones' podcast, Evans said hearing that Ballerini wanted a divorce was unexpected. “I was not expecting that conversation, no,” he said. It almost feels like somebody else, just from where I'm sitting now. After their divorce, Ballerini released the six-song EP, “Rolling Up the Welcome Mat,” in February 2023, which she confirmed to be about her split from Evans. Shortly after her divorce from Evans, Ballerini began dating the “Outer Banks” star, and she and Stokes made their red carpet debut together at the CMT Music Awards in April 2023. And that was quite the learning lesson for us,” she told Entertainment Tonight about their reconciliation. Despite wanting to make things work, she and Stokes called it quits for good early in 2026.
Is it simplistic to suggest that your feelings on Ryan Gosling as a Saturday Night Live host will depend largely on how delighted you are by breaking, or, alternately, with how much religious fervor you loathe the sight of sketch performers laughing at their own silliness? Hosts always get a little more leeway on the controversial issue of cracking up mid-sketch, because obviously not everyone can purge that instinct from their system over the course of six-day SNL boot camp. (On the other side of it, the idea of Horatio Sanz and Jimmy Fallon spending 17 hours a day together for years and still finding each other endlessly hilarious might feel to some like an extended sentence to eighth-grade study hall.) It's a bit strange to reduce Gosling, one of the more recognizable Hollywood leading men under 50 and one of the more famous people who's still an SNL fixture, to uncontrollable giggle fits. But that's become his signature over four hosting gigs, collectively yielding a bizarre mix of instant classics, glorified blown takes, and several sketches that occupy an unusual middle ground most famously occupied by Debbie Downer. (That is: Kinda-funny sketch temporarily but cheaply elevated by its live disintegration.) Gosling's latest episode tried to lean into the curve with an inelegantly explained novelty: In a sketch involving the old saw of teachers confiscating passed notes, an on-screen chyron informed viewers that the contents of those notes had been changed since rehearsal, meaning the actors would be reading them for the first time on-air, like when Bill Hader's lines as Stefon would change last-minute in an attempt to get him to break character as he read funny new variations. That latter technique became a part of the latter bit's lore, but wasn't ever explicitly stated; here, presumably lacking an elegant way to tell the audience what was going on within the context of the sketch, it became an unusually meta live-show game where you couldn't exactly get mad at the highly breakable Gosling and the typically unflappable Ashley Padilla for barely stifling guffaws as they describe new-to-them embarrassments (or gaze upon a Ziplock full of spaghetti specifically called out as a second lunch)—even if they weren't quite as precisely hilarious as a Stefon list of “everything” any given club has. Hold on, though: Yes, that was fun and novel, even if it might have been funnier with a dawning realization worked into the sketch itself, rather than an awkwardly direct announcement. But the previous live sketch of the night—all told, Gosling only did four of those, in a pretape-heavy episode—featured just as much breaking, with far less convincing pretense. Playing a goddess coaxing a trio of dimwitted cyclops warriors through a simple riddle they steadfastly refuse to decipher, Padilla tried to shout down her uncharacteristic breaks with her own stern authority, and it only seemed to make things worse. And the sketch itself was mostly about how cyclops warriors are dumb; is that a known mythological stereotype? If so, shouldn't the idea be to reverse or subvert it in some way? It started with Gosling becoming the rare host to break in the monologue, which is usually simply not funny enough to threaten anyone's composure in a major way. (Funny-enough bit, well-played by Gosling, but didn't it feel like an extended advert for the next episode and, as such, sort of untoward?) On the other end of the night, Gosling's live sketch work closed out with almost everyone regaining their footing for the bizarre “GooGoo Man” sketch, where Gosling straight-facedly (well, mostly) disputes hotel-room charges that don't accurately reflect what he should have paid for his encounter with someone or something called the GooGoo Man. !” joke, but by this point, seeing Gosling break only slightly in the face of such silliness had become impressive. Maybe that's why the passed-notes sketch was fun but ultimately a little redundant: The whole episode felt like a challenge to pretend-embarrass Ryan Gosling and see if he could keep a straight face—knowing from the jump that he couldn't. None of the night's three pretaped segments reached those heights, but the fake ad for Otezla, which combats plaque psoriasis by any and entirely unknown means necessary, was a hilarious variation on the old Happy Fun Ball spot. Due respect to the man who couldn't stop laughing: It was largely his delivery that made this sketch laugh-out-loud funny; he didn't oversell the perviness, instead playing it as a kind of quietly mincing delight. Still, this week's edition felt particularly, well, ragged, not least because their one guest played the segment out in a hurry without really resolving. It just feels like there's something off where a run-through of Weekend Update is only slightly less dispiriting than watching ten minutes of actual news. Colin Jost performed a partial makeup by reprising his Pete Hegseth in the cold open, which has the distinct advantage of seeming genuinely disdainful of its subject. It's barely even Jost and Che's fault; Update anchors aren't meant to last a full decade. I know Sarah Sherman can do more than just play the aghast wife and/or girlfriend—did it kill her to appear in an ad involving plaque psoriasis that was barely discomfiting at all? Also, given the assignment, Mikey Day did an amazing job suppressing his laughter when it was his turn to read an embarrassing note. Hey, does anyone remember who's serving as host and musical guest next weekend? I'm hoping it'll be more joyful Lady Gaga than later-period smugness-overload Justin Timberlake. "Well, I'm hosting next week, and it's been a while," Styles said during the segment. Harry Styles made an unexpected appearance on Saturday Night Live a week before his scheduled return as host and musical guest. When Gosling asked why he was there, Styles explained he had simply stopped by to watch ahead of his own hosting gig the following week. “Well, I'm hosting next week, and it's been a while,” Styles said during the segment. “So I just wanted to watch and get a feel for it.” At one point, the host joked that Styles' presence was throwing him off track as he tried to introduce a musical number tied to his upcoming sci-fi film Project Hail Mary. The cameo arrives ahead of Styles' official return to the SNL stage on March 14, when he will serve as both host and musical guest. Released Friday (March 6), the singer's fourth studio album features Billboard Hot 100-topping lead single “Aperture,” as well as “American Girls” — which got its own music video the day of the album's release, featuring Styles as an action movie star. Styles last hosted SNL while also serving as musical guest in 2019. You can watch Harry Styles' surprise cameo below. On Saturday Night Live, fired Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said her goodbyes, turning in the traditional and not-so-traditional items required in her Trump administration role. Noem (Ashley Padilla) was introduced by Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth (Colin Jost), who said she had been “reassigned—under the bus.” Trump let her go on Thursday, with one contributing factor reportedly being Noem testifying that the president had signed off on a $220 million DHS ad campaign in which she featured prominently. “As I've told my plastic surgeon, ‘The work is never done. Noem added that she has no regrets about her tenure, despite one of several controversies being federal agents shooting and killing two Americans during an immigration crackdown in Minneapolis in January, after which she falsely smeared them as domestic terrorists. “Like they say: you miss 100 percent of the dogs you don't shoot,” she said, referring to how she once shot her puppy and claimed it was a lesson in good leadership. “But the time has come for me to turn in my badge, gun, lips, lashes, teeth and forehead.” 'SNL' Cold Open: Fired Kristi Noem Turns In Her Gun, Badge, Lips and Lashes The Bomb-Shelter Rave: Why Tel Aviv Refuses to Stop Dancing “I just saw my office in a WeWork space outside Denver,” she said, “and it is spectacular.”
Even with Ryan Gosling back as host tonight, SNL eschewed a Hail Mary for its cold open and went with tradition with another predictable but still hilarious roasting of Pete Hegseth, with some axed and “reassigned under the bus” Kristi Noem tossed in. Or, as Ashley Padilla's ICE Barbie insisted, and convinced no one: “I didn't get fired, I self-deported.” Well, it is true that Noem's congressional testimony earlier this week that tried to blame Donald Trump for her unintentionally funny $220 million airport TV ads and inner-office relationships did go south pretty quick. “As I told my plastic surgeon, the work is never done,” Padilla's pitch-perfect Noem added, never knowing when enough is enough. Kicking off with the Weekend Update co-host as the ex-Fox host keg-guzzling and Sprite-spitting, Jost's Hegseth proceeded to shoot off about the media asking too many questions about what was happening in Iran. Certainly coming off a week of Trump flexing over the ongoing undeclared war with Iran, damning allegations from the Epstein Files about the ex-Apprentice host and a minor, some pretty pivotal primaries in Texas and a trio of former presidents attending the funeral of Jesse Jackson, there was a plethora of comedy riches for SNL to draw from in just the political realm alone. Truth be told, the March 5 pink-slipping of Noem and her immediate replacement by ex-MMA fighter and Sen. Markwayne Mullins (R-OK) would have made sense to go solo in the satire spotlight. For that matter, so would have Marco Rubio being gaslighted by Trump and the “I speak American” Hegseth after addressing today's awkward Shield of Americas summit in fluent Spanish. With Jost and Padilla in top form, the biggest surprise in tonight's cold open was that James Austin Johnson did not make a cameo as Trump himself. For once, SNL realized less is more. The past multiple Oscar nominee, who put on a pink-tinged and Slash-cameoed version of Barbie's “I'm Just Ken” at the 2024 Academy Awards, is about to lift off again March 20 with heavily weighted audience pleaser Project Hail Mary, based on Andy Weir's 2021 novel. Speaking of a minor Hail Mary, next week sees Harry Styles doing double duty on SNL as both host and musical guest. This is the second time the ex-One Direction singer has performed both roles, with Styles previous hosting and musical guest stint in November 2019. Taking all of his musical performances into account and that hosting slot seven years ago, next week with be Styles' seventh SNL appearance overall — well, if you saw Gosling's monologue, better make that Styles' eighth SNL appearance. Subscribe for full access to The Hollywood Reporter Pixar‘s chief creative officer Pete Docter is explaining why the Disney-owned company settled on cutting LGBTQ themes from their 2025 film Elio. In a new interview with the Wall Street Journal, Docter explained that Pixar did not want their film to force parents to have conversations they weren't ready to discuss with their children. The film was originally slated to be directed by Adrian Molina, with the main character of Elio initially being portrayed a queer-coded. After an early screening in the summer of 2023 in Arizona, where viewers reportedly said they liked the movie but no one raised their hand when asked if they'd see it in a movie theater, shifts followed. Disney's 'Robin Hood' Live-Action Remake Not Moving Forward, Says Director A former Pixar artist who worked on Elio told THR anonymously, “It was pretty clear through the production of the first version of the film that [studio leaders] were constantly sanding down these moments in the film that alluded to Elio's sexuality of being queer.” Hoppers, which released Friday, is the first Pixar movie to trail Elio, with a projected global box office debut of $88 million. “As time's gone on, I realized my job is to make sure the films appeal to everybody,” Docter said elsewhere in his WSJ profile. Rosanna Arquette recently reflected on her role in Quentin Tarantino‘s 1994 cult classic Pulp Fiction, and while she noted its seminal status in the film canon, she censured the director's excessive usage of the N-word in his works. She continued, “I cannot stand that he [Tarantino] has been given a hall pass. I want Quentin to know that all African Americans do not think that word is trendy or slick.” In recent years, fellow filmmaker Lee Daniels has also critiqued Tarantino's decision to use the word in his projects — particularly when the Inglourious Basterds director advised audiences to “see something else” if they had a problem with his creative choices. “That's not the right answer,” Daniels said, adding that he would have chalked up Tarantino's usage of the slur as “artistic” a decade or so ago while noting Tarantino has “no right to feel that way.” Meanwhile, Samuel L.
